Venom: Let there be Carnage

100 Words or Less: If you liked the first Venom movie, you will enjoy this one as well. This movie definitely uses the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality as all of the great parts of the first movie are on showcase in the sequel, while it still suffers from a few of the same flaws. If you can handle a bit of a slow start with just a bunch of random exposition (too much exposition for a sequel in my opinion) then you are in for a treat once this movie actually gets going.

Full Review: I am going to preface this review with two things.

One: I saw this movie almost a month ago but didn’t get around to reviewing it until now so it is a bit foggy in my mind.

Two: I was a fan of the original Venom movie and actually was quite excited for this sequel.

Now with that out of the way, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It took the great parts of the first movie, being Tom Hardy is amazing and the concept of antiheroes getting movies made starring them is something that makes me happy, and this movie just ran with those concepts.

Tom Hardy is a treasure. Everyone needs to accept this or we are no longer friends. With that out of the way, he is fantastic in this movie, even more so than the original in my opinion because he is both Venom and Eddie Brock and Venom has significantly more lines in the sequel. The fight scene between the two is probably one of my frontrunners for fight of the year because of the comedic elements and the details they went to to make it feel more real. I also appreciate the fact that they don’t feel the need to do the cliché “superhero with shirt off” scene. Even though I am sure Tom Hardy is in great shape, he looks like shit throughout this movie sporting a similar look to the sweaty grey hoodie from the first movie.

My biggest gripe with the sequel is ironically that it was too short. Let me explain.

Venom: Let there be Carnage is only 1 hour 37 minutes. Normally I would be hyped about this, taking less than 2 hours out of my day to see a movie. However, this comes at the cost of the first half of the movie feeling rushed and segmented into bits and pieces that are barely connected. Once the movie gets through that and we stop bouncing around between side characters and Eddie Brock, the movie starts to come together and hit it’s stride. All I am asking for is just a little more to connect the beginning and flesh it out a little more. That is it. Please. For the love of god.

Anyways, overall go see this movie (or at this point rent it/stream it) because worst case scenario you only lose 1 hour 37 minutes of your day :)

7.5/10 house chickens.
