Space Jam: A New Legacy
100 Words or less:
I’m not a fan of Lebron James. Anyone who has heard me and my father discuss him will know that. With that being said, this movie is a great example of why Lebron should retire and focus on movies. While this is by no means a cinematic masterpiece, it is exactly what a generation of kids who grew up singing the original space jam theme need, a fun distraction from the world we are living in that harkens back to a simpler time of our lives when the biggest worries were studying for our next big test in third grade.
Full review:
I am not a Lebron Stan but I risk sounding like I am because I actually enjoyed this movie. I wasn’t going to see this one because I had no desire to see an unnecessary sequel to a movie from 24 years ago, starring a basketball player that I am not a fan of. I was convinced to watch it by my sister who invited me to go see it at the drive in (What a shot of nostalgia that would have been). Unfortunately, it was a rainy day so we just watched it on HBO max in the safety and (semi) warmth of my apartment.
The movie is not fantastic. It follows the plot of the first movie almost exactly (with Bugs bunny making a joke about that very thing), the acting is not stellar from the main star Lebron, the supporting cast is meh, and it is of course a super predictable movie. With that being said, no one should have been going into this expecting a cinematic masterpiece rivaling the all time great movies. It’s a kids movie. It achieves the goal of being entertaining for children while also providing references and throwbacks that the adults will catch and give them a small laugh.
Now we can’t talk about Space Jam without talking about the star of the show, the Looney Tunes. The introduction of each of the tunes in this movie is equally clever and entertaining. The situations they are in when Lebron and Bugs come knocking to recruit them to the Tune Squad are all entertaining. From Granny and Speedy Gonzales being trapped in the Matrix, to Daffy and Porky being in the DC universe, they all have a fun new twist on Warner Brothers IPs.
The bottom line with the majority of these movies I review where I state it isn’t a cinematic masterpiece is that you need to make sure you don’t overblow your expectations. Was this movie my favorite movie I have watched? No, of course not but was it an entertaining way to spend an hour and a half on a Friday night? Yes. Absolutely, 100% yes. Movies are meant to be enjoyed, and all of the movie critics railing this movie have clearly lost the concept of what it was meant to be, which is a way to distract people for an hour and a half.
Anyway, Here’s the rating.
