Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

100 words or less:

Escape rooms; to some an enjoyable team building activity, to others a fad that left just as quickly as it came. this is the epitome of an unnecessary sequel to a movie that was just trying to cash in on something that hadn’t been super popular for a couple years when it was released. Even though it is unnecessary, it is still a good time, even if for a slasher inspired movie, there is shockingly little gore. Don’t expect much from this one and just enjoy the mindless killing for the enjoyment of sickos (that’s the plot don’t judge me)

Full review:

It seems as though either I have a knack for picking movies I want to see that are just not well reviewed by movie critics. I am fine with that because, let’s face it, movie critics are usually overly negative towards the most popular movies. Now, I am not saying the sequel to the 2019 movie Escape Room is going to be popular, because it probably won’t since it is not a big budget thriller that has the marketing budget equivalent to the GDP of Micronesia. It is however a fun thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out the puzzles of the many escape rooms in the movie.

No need to see the original as this movie essentially does the movie equivalent to a “previously on Escape room” and sums up the entire first movie in the first five minutes. Good for those who may have missed the first one but I don’t think anyone seeing this movie hasn’t already watched the original. I am not a huge fan of movies that require seeing the previous films to actually understand what is happening in the sequels. Thankfully this is not one of those movies. There are references to the previous movie and a few things newcomers may be confused about but those are fully explained when they occur (no spoilers here because I care). In general don’t be turned off by this being a sequel because you won’t be completely lost the whole time, this isn’t a complicated movie.

Overall, this is the type of movie that I think horror fans won’t like because there isn’t much gore despite the horrible ways some people die, while others won’t like this because it is essentially just tension the movie starting about 15 minutes in and it doesn’t let up the entire time. However, if you enjoy thrillers and want to lower your expectations for an hour and a half to just enjoy a fun movie with a really unique concept then you’ll probably have fun with this one.
