Jungle Cruise

100 words or less:

A pleasant surprise. That is the best way to describe this movie. Sure there are questionable plot points but it is a Disney movie so that happens. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are both amazing in their own ways and their chemistry along with a fun story make this a pleasant, if sometimes stressful, experience. Overall, the constant flow of action into comedic relief sets up a fun experience that will entertain people of all ages.

Fiancé review: This is a new section that will be appearing every once in a while when my lovely fiancé Christie comes with me to see a movie.

To start, Maui from Moana and Mary Poppins are expanding their repertoire and going to save a bunch of sick people. So if you like the Rock and Emily Blunt or are a fan of any Disney movie based on a theme park attraction, you will like this movie that is somewhat reminiscent in parts to pirates of the Caribbean. The puns and the giant cat help too.

Full Review:

Coming into this movie, I had almost no expectations. Similarly to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie when it originally came out, I was skeptical of a movie that Disney was going to make based on one of their theme park rides. However, I was intrigued when I saw that Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson were the stars of the movie. I have yet to see a movie with either of those two in it that I didn’t enjoy (yes that includes the rock in scorpion King. I was like 10 when I saw it and back then I saw no flaws in the CGI). From A quiet place to Edge of tomorrow, and from Hobbs and Shaw to Central Intelligence, these two have shown a great amount of range and are just awesome. When it comes to this movie, I feel as though the chemistry between the two stars is the highlight. Just watch any of their interviews from the promotion of this movie and you can really tell that they just seem to have fun with each other.

By far, the greatest scene of the movie is when we are first introduced to the Rock’s character and he rattles off several dad jokes back to back. As a fan of dad jokes, I was giggling for the entirety of that 10 or so minute scene. That really sets the tone for the comedic side of the movie. While we have plenty of funny moments in the movie, that doesn’t take away from the action sequences in the movie. The movie does a good job balancing the two in a way where I never felt overly stressed about the action because the characters were cracking jokes along the way.

Now there is a twist about two thirds through the movie that is teased at along the way but it still kind of comes from nowhere in a way that can be a bit jarring, but it’s a Disney movie so it isn’t super surprising if you pay close attention.

Overall this movie is a fairly formulaic Disney adventure movie that is a good time and worth a watch whether you want to take the family to the theater or hold off until it comes to Disney+.

7.5/10 Jungle cats named Proxima.

Also don’t go see this movie if you dislike snakes or bees. There are quite a few of those.
